What is hemp?

From the Cannabis Sativa plant, hemp is basically the part of the plant that is not marijuana.  Hemp can grow up to 18 feet fall, and can be harvested 70-90 days after seeding.  This means that a lot of hemp can be grown very rapidly. (4)

What can hemp be used for?

Hemp can be used for a wide variety of products.  The fibers of hemp can be used for fabric, paper, and plastics.  The hemp oil from the seeds of the Cannabis Sativa plant can be used for paint, biodiesel, and moisturizing body care products. (4)

In 1938, Popular Mechanics Magazine named hemp the "New Billion Dollar Crop" and mentions how it could create thousands of jobs for American workers.  The article also mentions how hemp is the standard fiber of the world, producing more than 5,000 products.

Can Hemp Help Our Carbon Footprint?

By widespread use of hemp for a couple of products, biodiesel and paper, there is a chance that we could see a reduction in the carbon dioxide emissions in our atmosphere.  Biodiesel is cleaner burning and more available than diesel made from fossil fuels.  Because hemp grows at such a rapid rate, the availability of biodiesel wouldn't be a problem as long as farmers kept growing it.  Biodiesel can be derived from many different oils as well.  For more information, check out the "Biodiesel" tab.  Using hemp for paper is also a way to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions because it would reduce the amount of trees cut down.  By having more trees using the carbon dioxide, along with the hemp grown also using the it as well, it would make sense that levels would reduce in our atmosphere.  For more information about hemp paper, check out the "Paper" tab.  By both reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted and increasing the amount used by plants, we can slow down the increasing rate of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
