Paper

Although Americans only account for 5% of the population, we consume 30% of the world's paper. (8) In fact, U.S. paper producers use 1 billion trees each year!  North American paper usage is the major driver of deforestation, as you can see we consume just over 500 lbs per year. (9)

The use of hemp to make paper has many advantages. (8)
1) Toxic bleaching chemicals aren't necessary for whitening, instead hydrogen peroxide can be used.
2) Hemp paper doesn't decompose and yellow as fast as wood-pulp paper, in fact it lasts hundreds of years longer.
3) An acre of hemp can produce 4 times as much paper as an acre of trees annually.
4) Because of the wide variety of uses of hemp, after the stems are sold for paper the remains can be sold for fibers and other products.  This makes the farmer more money.

Using hemp for the production of paper could greatly reduce the amount of deforestation.  This would benefit our Earth in a couple of ways.  For one, this would decrease the human presence and destruction of other species habitats.  Paper also happens to be a major component of waste in North American landfills.  Hemp products are biodegradable, so with widespread usage of hemp paper we can reduce the amount in landfills. Also, having more trees present to take in carbon dioxide would help reduce levels in our atmosphere along with the additional hemp plants.  Since hemp grows faster than trees, this would be an ideal plant for the production of paper.
